i have a wire haired jack russell and he had longish hair where it was about to cover his eyes so i got him shaved now its very short

Shaving a dog down does not cause his hair to grow faster. That is such an old wives tale. It just depends on the dog as to how fast his hair will grow. If you want him to have longer hair just trim around his eyes about once a month. I let my dogs coats get a little longer in the winter but I keep the hair cut close around their eyes and muzzle.

If you decide to trim his hair yourself, get a good pair of scissors and do not use them to cut anything but your dog's hair. Go to a beauty supply house and get a pair that costs a bit over $20.00. They will last you a long time if you only use them on your dog.
